iPad 2 Case Would Make To Supply Power
iPad 2 case would make a lousy substitute for a Dock connector. It is designed to support as much weight, it can draw as much power (most competing tablets include a proprietary DC input to get around this), as a “slave” it supply any power, and you need a separate connector for video and audio. Making HDMI part of this “dock” would solve the latter issue, but experience tells me that it would also make the whole process of docking and undocking a bit more finicky.
No, if they were going to replace the current Dock Connector with something standard, the only real option is iPad 2 case. It serves exactly the same role of combining several different connectors (USB slave, USB host, video out, line audio out, and high DC in), and making it a lot easier to create a multipurpose dock that can accommodate devices of different shapes and sizes.
However any change in connector at this point means abandoning support for the many Dock equipped stereo systems and other accessories which have been released over the years. Plus Apple iPad 2 case is kinda moving away from physical connections for streaming media and syncing data.
